How Swim Team Works
General Information
The KSTC swim team is a fun and rewarding experience for kids of owners, aged 6 – 18. Our goal is for every swimmer to have fun, be a good sport , and swim fast! KSTC’s swim team competes in the Greater Seattle Summer Swim League (GSSSL), which is an organization comprised of eight Southern Division and eight Northern Division swim teams from private clubs around the Seattle area. As per SSSL rules, only dues-paying members of KSTC (including leasees) are allowed to participate on swim team.
Practice Information
After school swim practices begin on May 22nd, 2023. As soon as the Kent School District begins summer break, practices are moved to the morning. Swimmers should plan to attend at least two practices per week. Older swimmers are encouraged to attend three or more practices.

Regular Season Information
Regular season swim meets are held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Warmups start at 4:45pm and meet events begin at 6pm. Meets usually run until 10:00 pm. There are seven regular season meets with half being held at KSTC and half held at the opponents pool. Regular season meets are dual meets where KSTC competes against one of the other seven teams in the Southern Division. All families are expected to help out at home meets by working at least one 2-hour shift. There are opportunities to help on deck and in the concessions area.
Following regular season, any swimmers who attains a Greater Seattle Summer Swim League Qualifying Time during dual meets are eligible to compete against all other qualifying Southern Division swimmers in a Preliminary post-season meet. There is one meet for girls and one for boys. Girls Prelims is always held the first Monday after the end of regular season and Boys Prelims is on the first Tuesday after regular season (please see the meet schedule). The top six swimmers in each event go on to compete in the Southern Division meet, which is held on Thursday of that same week. On that day, Northern Division competes in their own meet and the fastest six swimmers (in each event) from both divisional meets combined will go on to compete in the All-City Championship meet. The All-City meet is held on the first Tuesday in August. All post-season meets begin at 4pm.
Swimmers who do not attain a qualifying time in any individual event during regular season are eligible to compete in B-Championships, which is a fun, season-ending meet. Prizes, ribbons and candy are typically awarded. Swimmers who attain a qualifying time during B-Champs are eligible to swim in Prelims. B-Champs is held on the Thursday of the last regular season week.
The GSSSL (Greater Seattle Summer Swim League) is the governing body of our swim league and team.
- GSSSL Operating Rules can be seen HERE
- GSSSL Stroke Rules (what constitutes a legal stroke) can be seen HERE . These are the rules that will determine if a swimmer is disqualified (DQ).
We follow high school swim rules with a few exceptions.

Coach Bios:
Catherine Peter
Catherine started her swimming journey in White Center on The Salvation Army Swim Team before transferring to Husky Swim Club. She continued swimming at Highline High School and Central Washington University. After suffering her third shoulder injury during college, Catherine decided to remain on the pool deck in a new role as coach. Today she has over 20 years of coaching experience up throughout the Puget Sound region. Although her practices concentrate on skill building and efficiency in the water, her main focus is helping young people be better humans. Having watched previous swimmers progress to the Olympic Trials while others decided swim team just wasn’t their thing, Catherine believes this sport is much more about learning how to manage life than swimming fast times. Those are just bonuses.
Catherine spends her school days as a Language Arts teacher at Auburn School District’s alternative high school. She also supports her two children and their activities, currently with her son at Oregon State University and her daughter in high school. She’s been known to run for the exercise, not for the enjoyment, and to get in the water for a workout, as long as it involves more sun than yardage.
Lauren Kearney
Lauren began her water adventure as a Speedy Sixer for KSTC. Her love of water and the sport only grew from there. She swam at Auburn Mountainview HS and went to State all 4 years, breaking school records along the way. She then went on to swim at Pacific Lutheran University for 4 years. After graduation, Lauren began coaching, eager to share her love for the sport with others. Lauren began teaching swim lessons when she was 13, as well as coaching tennis at 18, another sport she loves. After her college swim career ended, she began coaching swim at KSTC, as well as Auburn Mountainview Highschool where she currently the head coach. Lauren’s favorite part about coaching is not only helping athletes improve as swimmers, but also as well rounded people.
Dylan Chang
Dylan has been part of KSTC for two years as a swimmer. He swam under coach Keith, Coach Tomas, and Coach Marley in the course of four years,
Currently, Dylan is attending Grad Canyon University studying Business Management and swimming for their club team. His hobbies include golf, working out, snowboarding, and eating food. He is excited to be part of the KSTC community once again as a coach.

What to take to the Meet
(Mark all of your items with your child’s name…things look alike and it’s easy to get them mixed up!)
1. Basics: Swimsuit, swim cap, goggles (plus a spare). Dusting the inside of the swim cap (after it’s dried) with baby powder or cornstarch helps preserve the cap and makes it easier to put on. You probably want to have your child come in their swimsuit so you don’t have to worry about getting them changed.
2. Towels: Pack at least two. If it is cold, one towel per event is even better.
3. Something to sit on: Examples are a sleeping bag, old blanket, extra towel, or camping chair; anything comfortable. Swimmers spend a lot of time on them. Some swimmers set up small tents to shade them on hot summer nights.
4. Sweatshirts and sweatpants: Bring one or two if possible. Meets go on, despite occasional chilly weather and rain, and evenings can get very cold in a soggy sweatshirt. Stadium jackets or deck coats (long, fleece-lined jackets) are sold locally and keep swimmers toasty warm.
5. T-shirts: Same reason as above and provides protection from the sun.
6. Sunscreen: SPF 15 or above.
7. Sharpie pen: For writing down the events your child will swim on his/her arm or hand.
8. Games: Anything to pass the time like travel games, coloring books, books, cards. Avoid things like Frisbees, balls…there really is not a lot of space at some swim clubs and it’s a good idea to encourage your swimmer to rest a bit in between events. Do NOT bring anything of value…we would hate to have anything “walk off” and ruin your child’s day.
9. Food and Drinks: Each swim meet has snack bars, but you can also bring your own snacks and drinks. Healthy snacks and plenty of water/sports drinks are recommended.
10. Waterproof Jacket: if rain is forecast.

Yes, there is practice on meet days. We will work on the strokes your child is swimming and relay starts.
Always arrive at 4:15PM. Parking can be tight at some of the pools and you’ll want to find some space to set up camp.
Driving directions for all the pools are on the website.
Upon arrival, find the heat sheet (often posted on the fence) and write down your child’s races (or snap a picture on your phone), they not be posted until a little later. Once you know the races, you or your child’s buddy should write them on your child’s arm so they can refer to it (sharpies).
For example:
E |
H |
L |
Swim |
11 | 2 | 3 | 25 Free |
Event 11, Heat 2, Lane 3, Freestyle – this is the order to use. Hint – After the meet is over, sun screen makes a great sharpie ink eraser.
Lineups will usually be posted at practice the morning of a meet. You can write the information down (or take a picture) then but definitely double check against the heat sheet posted at the meet as changes may have been made. Heat sheets will be posted at all meets. A “Heat Sheet” is a list of all swimmers by event. At post season meets you can purchase one as a keepsake of the seasons’ success and the money supports the various pools. Some parents might choose to share.
While you set up camp, your swimmer will get into the water for warm up. The announcer will tell the home and visiting teams when it is time for them to get into and out of the water. After warm up there will be a team meeting. If you have a younger swimmer make sure they connect with their buddy. At the team meeting the coaches will point out their relay teams for the younger swimmers so they know who to look for.
Be sure to listen to the announcer and check in with your child periodically and remind them when their race is getting close. Remind them that it is good sportsmanship to wait in the water until all swimmers have finished the race. They can shake hands with the swimmer next to them and then quickly exit the pool.
After their swim, they can go check in with coaches. If they are DQed (disqualified) the coach will know why and this is something that will be given attention to at the next practice. Stress to your swimmer that it happens to everyone at some point. Note that DQ also stands for Dairy Queen – the traditional salve to the ego. We never NEVER approach the officials directly although the official may come and talk to the swimmer if time allows.
A special reminder about relays and younger swimmers: At no time can more than two swimmers be in the pool at the same time. So the second leg swimmer gets in the pool prior to the start of the race and keeps his or her hand on the wall AT ALL TIMES. They should move left or right to allow good vision as the lead off swimmer approaches the wall. Once contact is made, the number two swimmer pushes off the wall. The number three swimmer cannot get in until the number one swimmer is out of the pool. Encourage the lead swimmer to exit immediately.
Each pool will have concessions during the meet. Please use your best judgment about what your child eats and when he/she eats it. A big cheeseburger right before a race is probably not the best choice. Parents are welcome to bring in outside food and drinks so it’s not necessary to rely upon the concessions. If you choose to bring adult beverages, be aware that different pools have different rules about it and at all times be discrete (put it in a cup) and responsible and glass is NEVER allowed on the pool deck. If you are timing, you should wait until you are done with your shift.
Please be courteous to officials, coaches and timers. A meet is not an appropriate time to question coaches about why your child is assigned to a particular race. Coaches are making conscious decisions with the goal of giving all swimmers plenty of opportunities to swim different events while at the same time, trying to put the team in the best position to win the meet Also, we always want to leave a positive lasting impression when we visit other pools so please clean-up any trash etc. If you see an item left behind by another KSTC family, please bring it back to the lost and found at our pool. And perhaps the most important item – this is supposed to be fun for parents and kids (and it really is!).
Come prepared to cheer and encourage.
Go Kent!
